My current work

As well as Head of Legal and contributing to the Guardian’s Comment is Free I’ve contributed political comment and reviews to The Wardman Wire and a column on the anglophile website Anglotopia. I’m writing my first book, a guide to the UK constitution aimed at non-lawyers.

Lecturing, training and speaking
I teach human rights and EU law to fast-streamers and government lawyers at the National School of Government and constitutional and EU law to undergraduates at the Open University. Before that I taught constitutional and EU law to graduates at BPP Law School, and at the University of Hertfordshire. I have spoken on current legal issues at major government conferences and to a range of organisations such as BERR, TSol, DEFRA, the Ministry of Justice, the Financial Services Authority and the Welsh Center for International Affairs. I am a confident, experienced public speaker, at ease with audiences from a handful to a couple of hundred.

What people say:

Extremely good speaker. Knowledgeable and interactive … Excellent.

Really excellent! Very clear and thought provoking.

Excellent! Should have been a longer session.

Amazing tutor. Excellent style of teaching. Tutorials are always brilliant. He really went out of his way to prepare us for exams. Wished we had him for the rest of our modules. Understanding of individual students needs.

Carl is a fantastic tutor. I have found his teaching techniques very helpful

(Open University student, 2012)

Tutorials were brilliant and surpassed my expectations … Carl has been an excellent tutor, he is passionate about the law and at his tutorials his passion is contagious.

(Open University student, 2011)

By far, Carl Gardner is the best tutor and teacher I have ever had. From day one he made his tutorials interesting, interactive and unmissable.

(Open University student, 2011)

I have thoroughly enjoyed Carl’s tutorials. They were interactive and inspiring.

(Open University student, 2011)

Carl our tutor made this course very enjoyable, he has the ability to cut through the “dusty law books”
